Keeping Healthy Habits While Working from Home

There’s no doubt that 2020 has been a stressful year, to say the least. Everyone deals with stress in their own way but during lockdown, it’s more important than ever to stick to healthy habits. Physical and mental health should be priority number one.

While you work from home here are some things to keep in mind.

  1. Movement

The gym may be closed but that doesn’t mean you can’t get in 30 minutes of activity. Walk around the block, do some yoga in your living room— stretch! Anything to get your body moving, it will make you feel so much better. Promise me to stand up from that office chair.

  1. Be careful staring at that screen

The rule is 20-20-20. Every twenty minutes, take twenty seconds to look at something twenty feet away. This relaxes your eyes and really works. Consider buying blue light blocking glasses, they tone down the brightness of your screen and prevent headaches. Doctors have found that looking at a screen before bed prevents a good night’s sleep. Your brain thinks it’s time to work which makes relaxing much more difficult.

  1. “It’s five o’clock somewhere”

You’re home. You’re not driving. The days are longer and more stressful, a drink at the end of the day couldn’t hurt, right? HR surveys indicate that 1 in 3 Americans have begun to drink alcohol during the workday during quarantine. If this is something you’re struggling with, talk to family members, friends and colleagues. Other people are going through this, too. Lean on that support.

Hang in there. Take time for yourself and work to find healthy habits and coping mechanisms.
