Beginning a new internship can seem daunting, especially for a first-timer. In order to ensure the opportunity is worthwhile, confidence is key. Confidence allows for connection, professional growth, and the strength to take initiative and perform to the best of their ability.

Navigating the professional world for the first time comes with a plethora of fears and challenges. These may include a hesitancy to ask questions, imposter syndrome, and a unsureness around what is expected or how to contribute. These fears are normal, but should not be a reason to surrender to feelings of doubt and get lost in a sea of comparison to others.

There are several confidence building tips that will assist first-time interns on a professional level and ensure a worthwhile learning experience sure to benefit both the intern themselves and the company they are interning for. These Include:

  1. Making Connections

Relationships at work allow interns to feel supported and connected to their position and teammates. Having people to check-in with, ask questions, relate to, and bounce ideas off of fosters creativity and a willingness to participate and grow. Reaching out to teammates and fellow interns through virtual or in-person interaction helps build a support network needed to help build confidence.

  1. Words of Affirmation

Confidence comes from within and repeating self-affirming phrases can shift mindsets, decrease doubt, and reinforce perceived value. Examples include; “I belong here,” “I bring a unique perspective,” “I am learning and growing everyday,” and “I don’t have to be perfect to make an impact.”

  1. Preparation and Progress Tracking

Interns should prepare before meetings by jotting down talking points, set goals for what they want to learn each week, reflect on their progress, and celebrate their wins and accomplishments such as finishing a task or simply asking a question. These habits help interns see their progress, grow confidence, and feel more connected to their work.

Confidence in the workplace is something to be built upon and one should never wait until they are 100% confident before taking action. Embracing the opportunity as a learning experience and connecting with others in the same position can help show that their fears and hesitancy are not just felt by them. Patience towards themselves, staying curious, and engaging often will support real growth for themselves, and their employers.
